Achievements

NAIFA Toronto OntarioNAIFA Toronto successfully sought and got judicial reviews for the human rights violation and abuse of non-status people of African descent. One of such cases was that of Dr. Michael Akhimen who died in solitary confinement in the Celebrity Inn Detention Centre in 1995.

Dr. Akhimen had persistently complained about weakness, vomiting, visual difficulties, and dizziness – all symptoms of an advanced diabetic condition that even a cursory medical attention would have diagnosed and, therefore, prevented a tragic loss of life. Dr. Akhimen was instead confined in a solitary cell where he remained in a somnolent state for more than 12 hours before his death.
